However if you only have a day, you'll just scratch the surface of what this wonderful place has to offer. So why not stay a bit longer and discover more of the Forest's charms, it won't take long before you fall under its spell.

Said to have inspired the likes of J.R.R.Tolkien, J.K.Rowling and Dennis Potter, "Gloucestershire's greatest natural wonder", the Forest of Dean, is best explored by following The Royal Forest Route, which takes visitors on a 20-mile tour of the spectacular broad-leaf forest.

Springtime is one of the best times of the year to follow this route, when many areas, such as the Soudley Valley are filled with the most spectacular bluebells.

Walking

Where better to enjoy a walk, hike or trek amidst beautiful and unspoilt countryside than the Forest of Dean? There are numerous long distance paths, circular routes and waymarked trails throughout the district. Whether you prefer an independent hike or a guided trek, there are plenty of options to choose from.

The English Bicknor Route

Dramatic cliffs, superb views and riverside walking with a wrapping of internationally protected woodlands and sprinkling of industrial ruins.

The Lancaut Loop

Sheer limestone cliffs, dramatic views, ruins and a scramble across boulders and along narrow ledges by a river drop. Not for the faint hearted or weak kneed.

The Penallt Pubs Circular

A moderately easy circular walk starting and ending along the river, but rising into the wooded hills around. Some excellent views with a couple of pubs en-route.

The Peregrine Path

This unique cross border route straddling the England and Wales border follows some of the finest scenery in the UK within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
