Said to have inspired the likes of J.R.R.Tolkien, J.K.Rowling and Dennis Potter, "Gloucestershire's greatest natural wonder", the Forest of Dean, is best explored by following The Royal Forest Route, which takes visitors on a 20-mile tour of the spectacular broad-leaf forest.
Springtime is one of the best times of the year to follow this route, when many areas, such as the Soudley Valley are filled with the most spectacular bluebells.
Leisure Activities
The Forest is full of exciting things to see and do. It's the home for adrenaline seekers, for water enthusiasts and family outings. However, the Forest is also a place to relax and is sometimes best enjoyed sitting at a lake side or taking to the Golf Course to admire the views.
The Forest is also home to five leisure centre's in it's major towns of Newent, Sedbury, Coleford, Cinderford and Lydney. They offer a range of leisure activities such as Swimming and Fitness Suites, you can hire out football pitches and sports halls for Badminton, Tennis, Cricket, Squash or Volleyball. Newent has its very own Aromatherapy Steam Room and Cinderford is home to a superb all weather outdoor pitch and Tennis Courts.
