Said to have inspired the likes of J.R.R.Tolkien, J.K.Rowling and Dennis Potter, "Gloucestershire's greatest natural wonder", the Forest of Dean, is best explored by following The Royal Forest Route, which takes visitors on a 20-mile tour of the spectacular broad-leaf forest.
Springtime is one of the best times of the year to follow this route, when many areas, such as the Soudley Valley are filled with the most spectacular bluebells.
Adrenaline & Adventure
If you fancy having a go at something really different that will get the heart racing, then the high wire adventure ropes course is a must. If you are looking to combine that with another activity, then how about sphering, paintballing, archery or clay shooting? All of these exciting activities are available in the Forest of Dean.
Climbing...
Symonds Yat Rock is well known, not only as one of the country's best viewpoints, but also as an excellent climbing venue, and there is no shortage of climbing routes to suit all abilities. While beneath the limestone rocks of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, lie beautiful grottos and rock formations in a fascinating subterranean world.
The desire to climb is with us from childhood, from those first faltering efforts to get a view from a window, our desire to be higher and see more grows with us.
Both novice climbers and the more experienced will find Symonds Yat Rock, as well as other parts of the Wye Valley, the perfect climbing experience. The area is suitable for individuals or groups and is also ideal for other activities such as Tyrolean traversing and abseiling.
Caving & Mine Exploration...
As for caving and mine exploration, the natural caves and ancient iron ore mines of the Forest of Dean present great adventure and exploration of the unknown. Find out how the system was formed, the age of the minerals, and how the ore was extracted hundreds of years ago before modern mining techniques.

Forest of Dean has two separate high ropes adventure courses which offer the ultimate adventure activity with a multitude of elements to suit all tastes, from absorbing team initiatives at ground level to mind-bending challenges high up in the trees and full-on adrenalin adventure for individuals.
