Said to have inspired the likes of J.R.R.Tolkien, J.K.Rowling and Dennis Potter, "Gloucestershire's greatest natural wonder", the Forest of Dean, is best explored by following The Royal Forest Route, which takes visitors on a 20-mile tour of the spectacular broad-leaf forest.

Springtime is one of the best times of the year to follow this route, when many areas, such as the Soudley Valley are filled with the most spectacular bluebells.

Activities

Explore the many trails through this ancient forest on foot, by bike or on horseback, or why not get the adrenalin pumping with something more adventurous such as a high wire rope course, canoeing, caving or abseiling?

The area is also home to one of the best rivers in the country for canoeing and kayaking, the River Wye and there are some great fishing lakes and golf courses. Whatever you try, you're guaranteed to get a taste for our fresh air and come back for more.
